In additions to the one you mentioned, there are a few other Streep's (early) performances that are worth looking into:
• Julia(1977) Streep’s debut movie, one of those Oscar movies you seem to be so interested in. It has the legendary teaming of reigning movie queen (at the time) Jane Fonda and her UK counter-part Vanessa Redgrave. The two leading stars are of the same age, both descended from an acting dynasty and both are considered intelligent, intimidating, outspoken, controversial and, above all, modern feminists. Streep played a superficial socialite whom Fonda’s Lillian Hellman gave a cold shoulder to
• Holocaust (1978) A TV mini-series that won Streep an Emmy, it was this performance that gave Streep the credential to play Sophie Zawistowski, another Holocaust survivor in “Sophie’s Choice”, which of course won her her second Oscar
• The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979) Made right before Streep hit it big. There is always a certain coldness in Streep’s acting that served her well here as a scheming Southern belle. They never offer Streep this kind of roles anymore, showed you that fame is a two-edge sword. Once you became famous, you got typecast.
Finally, there was also the part Streep DIDN’T get. She was considered for the role of Eva Peron in the film version of Evita and, when asked on whether Madonna can be casted as Evita, she has famously (and jokingly) said that “I can sing better than she can. If Madonna gets it, I’ll rip her throat out!” One can only hope Streep will keep her words :-)
