Haven’t dropped a message for ages but since you are talking about old movies, I just can’t resist the temptation.

It is true that the 30s is considered the golden era of Hollywood and 1939, the year your two examples “Gone with The Wind” and “Wizard of Oz” were released, is the undisputed best year ever; however it is more artistically than financially. In fact, “Wizard of Oz” was *not* profitable during its initial release and it was through the re-release over the years that recovered the cost and elevated it to classic
As you have brought up “King Kong”, the original “King Kong” was released by the now defunct studio RKO in 1933. Although it was a smash hit at the time, RKO was actually doing so badly in business at the time that it almost got shutdown. It was only by the phenomenal commercial success of “King Kong” at the nick of time that saved RKO from bankruptcy, which they finally did in the 50s.
